The Bali administration has announced that it will start charging foreign tourists a tax of 150,000 Indonesian rupiah (approximately $10) per person starting next year. The funds collected from the tax will be used for waste management and cultural preservation programs.

The tourism activities on the resort island have resulted in waste piling up, and cultural preservation is another important part of Bali tourism. The additional funding from the tourist tax will help Bali maintain its status as a world-class tourist destination for its environment and culture.

Due to legal reasons, the Bali administration had previously canceled a plan to impose a $10 tax on foreign tourists in 2019. The new tax scheme is expected to be implemented in February 2024.

Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Vinsensius Jemadu said that international tourist taxation would also be applied in five other destinations in Indonesia soon: Lake Toba (North Sumatra province), Borobudur Temple (Central Java), Mandalika (West Nusa Tenggara), Labuan Bajo (East Nusa Tenggara), and Likupang (North Sulawesi).

Vinsensius said that the flat tax of 150,000 rupiahs for foreign tourists in Bali is considered a globally oriented policy and that tourism tax should go hand in hand with the quality improvement of services and hotels. He also expressed hopes that Bali would become a model for other tourist destinations in Indonesia.
