How to get there

- By Flight: Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport connects Kolkata to Southeast Asia and some countries of Europe. The domestic terminal is one of the best in the country and is connected to all the major towns and cities. Prepaid taxis are available from the airport to the city, which is located at a distance of 20km. There is also a rail link connecting the airport to the Circular rail station in Dum Dum, though very trains operate on this line presently.

- By road: There are regular bus services for Kolkata from almost any part of India. From Delhi, via NH 19, it takes almost a day to reach Kolkata. Buses are also available from nearby cities like Kharagpur, Haldia etc. You can also alternatively hire taxis for the same or you can also pick up cabs or shared taxis.

- By Train: Kolkata has two main railway stations- Howrah and Sealdah. It is connected to all the big stations in India and is a gateway to NorthEastern India. If you are coming to Kolkata via Sealdah, you can take a prepaid taxi to travel to the city. Ferries are available from the Howrah to get you to the other side of the river at Babu Ghat or Fairlie Place from where you can take a taxi, bus or autorickshaw to all the parts of the city.

- By Waterways: The river Hooghly that runs through the west part of the city is one of the less crowded but slow-medium of traffic. There are several points from where you can board several regular ferry services. These services are a good way of avoiding the traffic snarl if you are travelling without luggage. It offers a spectacular view of the Howrah Bridge as it passes beneath it.

Ways to get around the city

Kolkata is well connected by metros, local trains, taxis and cabs. Although trams are the archetypal colonial remains, they now remain limited to certain sections of the city only. You can also take a horse-carriage ride or tonga ride around some parts of the city.

Best time to visit

Kolkata has three seasons – warm summers, a moist monsoon and pleasant winters. Being a coastal city though, with a typical tropical climate, winter is the best time to visit Kolkata.

If you’re planning a trip to Kolkata, choose the winter months between October and February for your vacation. Of course, the weather is perfect for visiting, but it is also when the city comes alive, with festivals and celebrations dotting every street corner. The temperature is pleasant, the markets are filled with fresh fruits and vegetables, and Kolkata throws open its doors to welcome visitors.

Victoria Memorial

The Victoria Memorial, completed in 1921, is an impressive blend of British and Indian architectural styles, featuring elements of Indo-Saracenic, Gothic, and Mughal designs. The memorial is surrounded by lush gardens, fountains, and statues, creating a serene atmosphere. Inside, it houses a museum with an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures, and historical artifacts related to the British Raj, including works by renowned artists like Thomas Daniell and John Hassall. Fort William

Fort William, named after King William III, was built in 1696 and has a storied past, especially during the battles between the British and the Nawab of Bengal. The fortress has witnessed significant historical events, including the famous Black Hole of Calcutta incident. Today, it serves as a military facility for the Indian Army, and while access is restricted to civilians, the exterior is impressive, with its formidable walls and a scenic view of the Hooghly River. The fort’s strategic location and historical significance make it a point of interest for those exploring Kolkata’s rich past.

Belur Math

Belur Math, founded in 1897 by Swami Vivekananda, is the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission. It beautifully reflects the philosophy of unity in diversity, showcasing architectural styles from Hindu, Muslim, and Christian traditions. The main temple is dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna and features intricate carvings and serene surroundings. Visitors can explore the peaceful gardens, attend spiritual discourses, or participate in meditation sessions. Belur Math not only serves as a place of worship but also as a center for social service and education, embodying the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda.

Howrah Bridge

The Howrah Bridge, officially known as Rabindra Setu, is one of the most recognizable symbols of Kolkata. Completed in 1943, this cantilever bridge spans the Hooghly River and connects Howrah with Kolkata. Remarkably, it has no bolts or nuts; its massive steel structure relies on a unique design to support its weight. The bridge is a vital transportation link, handling thousands of vehicles and pedestrians daily.
